An Electronic Signature Lacks the Security and Encryption Found in a Digital Signature

An electronic signature is similar to a digital signature, with one key difference. This difference is in regards to the level of security used with the signature types. With a digital signature, there is built in encryption methods used to increase the security and safety of using such a signature. This level of security is often absent in the other form of e-signatures.

Both Electronic Signature and Digital Signature Formats Are Used by Some Organizations

Some organizations may use a combination of both electronic signature and digital signature formats. For instance, e-signatures can be used to sign generic email messages, employee communications, and other such data types, which do not require encryption. But, when encryption is required, such as for approving payroll, employee vacation time, purchase requisitions, and contracts, then a digital signature should be used, instead.
